This microlot comes from Finca San Francisco in the mountains of Jinotega, Nicaragua, owned and operated by Don Francisco and his wife, Blanca Nieve. The couple has been cultivating coffee here at high altitude for many years, producing lots that reflect both the land’s natural richness and their dedication to quality.
Finca San Francisco sits at 1,350–1,400 meters, where cooler temperatures and persistent cloud cover create a unique microclimate. The cherries mature more slowly here than in much of Nicaragua, resulting in a harvest that takes place nearly two months later than elsewhere in the country. This extended maturation allows the beans to absorb more nutrients, contributing to greater complexity in the cup. The family also leaves parts of the farm in its natural forest state to protect spring water sources, demonstrating their commitment to conservation.
This lot is part of the Gold Mountain Coffee Growers (GMCG) network, a social enterprise that partners directly with producers in Nicaragua. GMCG is known for its emphasis on traceability, ethical trade, and sustainability. In addition to connecting farmers to specialty roasters, the group invests in projects such as providing clean water to schools, medical assistance, microcredit, and educational resources for local communities.
For Don Francisco and Blanca, the relationship with GMCG has been transformative. Previously members of a struggling cooperative, they joined GMCG early on and received financing to expand their farm and improve infrastructure. Investments have included a truck to navigate the steep mountain road to the valley for drying, upgraded processing equipment, housing improvements, and expanded access to electricity. Over time, they have even acquired a second farm with support from GMCG, further securing their family’s livelihood.
Like many washed Nicaraguan coffees, this microlot balances approachability and nuance. Compared with naturals from the region, which often highlight tropical fruit and fermented sweetness, washed lots such as Finca San Francisco emphasize clarity, nutty sweetness, and a clean finish.
