Papua New Guinea (PNG) occupies one half of the world’s second-largest island and is home to more than 1,000 distinct ethnic groups. While the country is known for its lush beauty and fertile land, limited infrastructure and rural conditions have historically made coffee production and export challenging. Despite these barriers, PNG has developed a reputation for producing exceptional specialty coffee.
This lot comes from the Waghi Valley, bordering the Anglimp and Kindeng districts. The valley, often called the “food bowl of PNG,” has supported agriculture for thousands of years. In the shadow of an extinct volcano and alongside the Wara Tuman River, the fertile earth here provides an ideal environment for coffee cultivation.
The coffee is produced by the Kindeng Smallholder Farmer Network, a community of growers who have been cultivating and improving quality for more than a decade. Most farmers in this area own less than a hectare of land, operating what are often called “coffee gardens.” Families harvest ripe cherries by hand and deliver them to the Kindeng Wet Mill for processing. Here the coffee is washed and prepared for export, with care taken to minimize defects — a challenge that can often affect coffees from the region. The group also works collectively to adopt improved farming techniques, reduce environmental impact, and implement integrated pest management.
The varieties planted in the Waghi Valley are primarily Arusha and Blue Mountain, cultivated at 1,500–1,800 meters. Together, the fertile volcanic soil, high elevation, and communal dedication to quality contribute to coffees that can be truly remarkable.
Like coffees from neighboring Indonesia, Papua New Guinea lots can sometimes show wide variability in quality due to the challenges of smallholder farming and limited infrastructure. However, when processing is handled carefully — as with this lot from the Kindeng Smallholder Farmer Network — the results can be exceptional, offering a distinctive balance of sweetness, spice, and fruit that sets them apart from many other origins.
