The name Yirgacheffe (pronounced YUR-guh-chef) carries a reputation that extends well beyond specialty coffee. Located in southern Ethiopia within the larger Sidamo region, Yirgacheffe is one of the most recognized coffee origins in the world, celebrated for its floral, tea-like, and fruit-forward profiles. Though the area itself is small, the quality of its coffees has made it as well-known as Jamaican Blue Mountain or Kona.

Coffee in Yirgacheffe is often cultivated in “coffee gardens” — small family plots of 0.5–1.5 hectares, where coffee is interplanted with other crops such as bananas. Across the zone, more than 43,000 producers farm about 62,000 hectares of land, much of it situated above 2,000 meters. This high elevation, combined with fertile soil and traditional cultivation methods, contributes to the exceptional character for which the region is known.

This lot was sourced through YKM Coffee Trading, a family-run exporter with three generations of experience spanning more than five decades. YKM now operates multiple washing and sun-drying stations across Yirgacheffe, Guji, Gedeb, and Sidamo, making them one of Ethiopia’s most significant exporters.

The Wote Konga Natural is a Grade 1 lot, Ethiopia’s highest quality designation, produced at the Konga sun-drying station with cherries delivered from surrounding smallholder farms. Only ripe cherries are selected and carefully sorted before being laid out to dry on raised beds. This meticulous process yields a cup that is vibrant, complex, and distinctly Yirgacheffe — with pronounced fruit notes, floral aromatics, and lively acidity.

Like many Ethiopian naturals, coffees from Yirgacheffe highlight the country’s deep heritage as the birthplace of coffee. Compared with washed lots from the same region, which often lean toward citrus and floral clarity, naturals such as this one emphasize lush fruit, sweetness, and layered depth, making them among the most expressive offerings in the world.
