This coffee comes through a direct-trade relationship with Jake Smith and Homage Coffee Source, whose on-the-ground presence in East Africa has made it possible to build meaningful partnerships with producers in both Uganda and Burundi. Through these relationships, we are able to source coffees with clear traceability, fair compensation, and long-term sustainability at the producer level.

Uganda’s coffee sector has historically been built around volume-driven production, with many farmers home-processing cherries and delivering wet parchment to dry mills. While efficient, this system has often limited traceability and consistency in quality. In response, our partners at Manafwa Specialty Seeds established their own washing station in the southern reaches of the Mt. Elgon region, providing a centralized point for cherry collection, processing, and farmer education.

Operating since 2019, Manafwa Specialty Seeds has made significant progress in strengthening farmer relationships, improving harvest practices, and promoting sustainable farm management. This washed lot from Bukalasi Village in the Bududa District represents some of the finest fully washed coffee we have tasted from Uganda; clean, sweet, well-structured, and remarkably stable.

This coffee also marks a milestone for Peregrine. While we have sourced coffees from Uganda in the past, this is the first washed Ugandan coffee we have roasted. It reflects exactly what we hope for in washed coffees from Africa: clarity, balance, and expressive sweetness without excess.

In the Cup

Lime

Bright, refreshing citrus leads the way. The acidity is tart yet sweet, reminiscent of fresh lime juice with a clean, uplifting character.

Shredded Coconut

As the cup opens, a sweet coconut note emerges, lending a creamy texture and dessert-like softness that balances the citrus beautifully.

Ginger Snap

The finish brings gentle spice and deep sweetness, recalling a warm ginger snap fresh from the oven. Subtle heat and brown sugar-like richness round out the cup with comforting complexity.

This coffee is both smooth and dynamic — a distinctive expression of Ugandan washed coffee and a unique opportunity we’re proud to share.
